Beef cake is an authentic snack from the Malabar region of Kerala; goes well with a cup of hot evening tea.
- Beef (minced) - 1 cup
- Egg - 4 nos
- Onion (chopped) - 1 cup
- Ginger paste - 1 tsp
- Garlic paste - 2 tsp
- Green chilli (chopped in round) - 3 nos
- Mint leaves (chopped) - 2 tbsp
- Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tbsp
- Garam masala powder - 1/4 tsp
- Black pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
- Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Ghee - 2 tbsp
- Oil - 3 tbsp
- Salt - to taste
Marinate & mince
Marinate the beef with a pinch of turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala powder, 1/4 tsp of red chilli powder and salt. Keep aside for at least 1/2 an hour. Next step is to cook the beef thoroughly. You can use a pressure cooker to do this; 3-4 whistles will ensure the beef is cooked well. Allow the contents to cool and drain the water. Use a blender/mixer to shred the cooked beef. You could also directly use shredded beef if available in the market.
Preparing the beef mixture
Heat a pan on medium flame and add oil to it. Once hot, add onion and salt, and saute well till the onions turn transparent. Now add ginger, garlic, green chilli and roast well. Add mint and coriander leaves and mix well. Add garam masala powder, pepper powder, chilli powder and turmeric powder and roast for some time. Now add the shredded beef, mix it well with the contents of the pan. Beef mixture is now ready. Switch off the flame and allow to cool.
Making the Egg batter
Use a food processor or blender to beat 4 eggs. Beat till they become fluffy. Pour this batter to the beef mixture, mix well.
Preparing the cake
Heat a sauce pan or pressure cooker on low flame. Once hot, pour 1 tbsp of ghee and uniformly spread it over. Now pour the beef batter on to the pan. The pan used should have enough height to support the contents when it rises due to baking. Cover the pan with a lid. The contents now need to get cooked in an indirect heat. So place a flat pan below the pan with the contents and allow to cook on very low flame. Continue to cook on very low flame till the cake starts to rise. This might take around 20 more minutes. However you can check the contents to see if it's properly baked by pricking it with a knife. Once it is satisfactorily cooked, flip the cake to a second pan using a spatula. On very low flame, allow to cook for another 2-3 minutes. Switch off the flame. Allow to cool. Beef cake is now ready for serving. 🙂
