Dates fritters or Eethappazham pori

Dates fritters or Eethappazham pori is a tasty tea time snack, liked by children and adults equally, popular in the Malabar region of Kerala. It is also a very common snack during Iftar.

Ingredients (Serves - around 12-14 pieces)DSC_0197 (Medium)

  • Dates - 200 gms
  • Sugar - 1 cup
  • Maida (all purpose flour) - 1 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1 pinch
  • Salt - 1 pinch
  • Oil - for deep frying


Preparing the batter

Take a medium sized bowl and add maida, sugar, cardamom powder and salt to it, mix everything well. Next add 1/2 cup of water and mix the contents thoroughly to get a thick dropping consistency.DSC_0202 (Medium)

Preparing the dates

Open up the dates and take out its seeds. We will use 3 pieces of dates to make one fritter. Use a mortar and pestle to mash 3 pieces of dates together. Try and get a round shape for the mashed dates.


Heat a frying pan on medium flame with enough oil to deep fry the fritters. DSC_0217 (Medium)When the oil is hot, dip each of the fritters into the batter and drop them into the hot oil. You can fry more than one at a time, but just ensure the pan is not too crowded. Fry the fritters till they turn golden brown in color.
