Paneer Butter Masala

Paneer butter masala is without doubt one of the most popular Indian curries in the Vegetarian category. Originally from North India, this dish is now equally popular in rest of the country and most restaurants will definitely have this dish as one of their delicacies.

Ingredients (serves 2)


  1. Coriander powder - 1 tbspDSC_0591 (Medium)
  2. Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  3. Garam masala powder -  2 tsp
  4. Kasoori methi - 1 tbsp
  5. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  6. Tomato ketchup - 2 1/2 tbsp
  7. Tomato Puree - made out of 1 tomato
  8. Milk - 1/2 cup
  9. Red Food color - a pinch (optional)
  10. Salt - a pinch


  1. Paneer - 250g/12 cubes
  2. Butter - 2 cubes (roughly 25 gms)DSC_0594 (Medium)
  3. Onion - 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
  4. Green chilli - 1 tsp
  5. Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp
  6. Fennel seeds or Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  7. Coriander leaves - few
  8. Milk - 1 cup
  9. Salt - to taste


Make the tomato Puree

Tomato puree can be bought ready made from any of the supermarkets. Otherwise the same can be easily prepared at home too. Take a whole tomato and boil it. Allow the tomato to cool and then peel off its skin. Cut the tomato into 4 pieces and blend them using a blender to get the puree.

Make the sauce

This is the sauce that gives the curry its thick flavor. Take all the ingredients mentioned under Set-1 and mix them well.

Prepare the curry

Heat a pan on medium flame. Add butter cubes and wait till it melts. Though the name of the dish has butter in it, it DSC_0596 (Medium)can very well be prepared using just oil without compromising on the taste. You can either use Fennel seeds or Cumin seeds, its a personal choice. Add them to butter (or oil) and wait the seeds stop to crack. Add onion, saute them till the onion turn slightly transparent. Add ginger garlic paste and saute well. Add green chilli and stir the contents well. Add the sauce we prepared earlier and a cup of water, mix the contents well. Ensure the pan is still on medium flame. Cover the lid and let the mix to boil. Add the Paneer cubes to the mix, stir them well and again cover the pan. Let the paneer cubes get cooked in the boiling gravy for about 5 minutes. We should now have a very thick gravy, dilute this with a cup of milk. Check for salt and add as necessary. Cover the lid again and let the contents to boil for about 2 minutes, till it becomes thick. Switch off the flame, sprinkle few chopped coriander leaves.
